Obesity
Facts
Nearly two-thirds of adults in the USA
are overweight, and 30.5 percent are obese, according to data from the 2002-03
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). If your
weight is 20% or more over the ideal weight for your height you are considered
to be obese. If you are 100 pounds or more above your ideal weight, you are
considered to be in a morbid obesity category.
Morbid obesity is considered a
serious disease and has been linked to shortened life expectancy.People often lose weight - only to
gain it back, sometimes gaining even more. This yo-yo effect is discouraging
and may bring added health risks. This fact is recognized by an increasing
number of healthcare professionals and scientific publications
Research suggests that people most
successful in long-term weight loss eat a diet low in fat and high in
carbohydrate, regularly monitor their weight and food intake and engage in high
levels of physical activity, about one hour each day. In addition to helping to
control weight, physical activity decreases the risk of dying from coronary
heart disease and reduces the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and
colon cancer. Read More
